Shown here is our Nanking design. Nanking now called Nanjing is a city on the eastern coast of China. Because of its location Nanking was a major exporting city, silk being one of the largest. Yun-Jin or, “Cloud Brocade”, silk was and still is one of the most popular silks in the market today. We used this Cloud Brocade idea in our Nanking carpet. Many of the motifs in the carpet are depicting the same cloud motifs used in the famous Yun-Jin silks. This carpet is hand-knotted in India with a blend of Gazni Afghan and Indian handspun wool, incorporating a high hand twisted base with a light twist in the motif giving an almost 3-D effect. The Arcadia Collection is hand-knotted in Jaipur, India. The yarn used is highland Afghani wool that is spun by hand, then ''hard-twisted'' by hand to give the program a uniquely ''hand-crafted'' texture. The striated patina in the line is achieved in two ways. First, the hard-twist wool does not absorb all colors with the same saturation. This provides a kind of ''sparkle'' to the finish. Second, the wool is dyed in small hand batches. The large number of dye lots used in every color increases the striated effect. After hand shearing, the rugs are given a low-luster finishing wash that removes excess clippings from the pile and helps to set the dye colors. The luster present in the collection is purely a function of the extremely high quality wool. The production techniques noted above, the simple transitional and contemporary patterns, and the subdued colors combine to give the Arcadia Collection a highly textural, organic appearance that offers incredible design flexibility. Flat-woven in the traditional of an antique Persian carpet, Sumak rugs such as this one have an antique look and feel resembling an old, worn rug that has softened and faded to perfection. Because Sumak rugs (also spelled Soumak) are hand-knotted on the back, they are extremely durable. The face of the rug has an 'embroidered' texture that shows off the intricacy of the workmanship put into the rug.
