I recently placed an order on BabyAge.com for a changing table, wagon, crib mattress and portable changing pad. I was notified 4 days later by email that my order need additional verification and that I should call the customer service number. When I called they told me that based on the dollar amount of my order, they required additional information to verify identity before processing the order. They asked me for the last 4 digits of my social security number and my birth date.
I have never given out that information for any online order that I have placed and have never had an issue with a company processing the order and verifying my information. When I placed the order at BabyAge.com, I used my credit card billing address as the shipping address, which generally makes orders process quickly with credit card companies. I was not and never will be comfortable with giving anyone the last 4 digits of my social security number and birthdate for verification. When I asked the customer service representative if there was other information I could use to complete the verification, they told me there was not and that they would have to cancel my order. When I asked to speak with a supervisor, they told me there was not one available and that they would tell me the same information.
I am all for having good procedures to prevent fraud and identity theft, but was extremely uncomfortable with the information that BabyAge.com was asking for. I was also very disturbed that they did not have another way to verify and complete an order. Many, many other online retailers complete transactions safely and use standard information to verify a purchaser's identity. It has become relatively common practice to use the CVV numbers on credit cards as added protection against fraud.
Bottom line is that I will not ever shop on BabyAge.com because of their policy and unhelpful customer service staff and unwillingness to accept another form of identity verification.
