I was trying to order a jewelry box online as a Christmas gift. I had a question about the item I liked so I called Music Box Attic for assistance. The girl on the phone (Kira) told me that the box I was ordering was made of solid wood and was from Italy and quite a nice box. I figured the hefty price substantiated her claims. I opted to have an engraved plaque and a music box added to the box. All told it cost me $139, shipped UPS ground to my home. All was fine until I opened the box...

Inside the shipping box was the white box containing my jewelry box. First thing I noticed was the large "MADE IN CHINA" sticker on it. Note, this was not your typical little golden oval that says MADE IN CHINA, it was a large rectangular sticker that also featured a picture of the jewelry box itself, so there was no mistaking it. Next, I opened the box then the wrapping tissue and I found a poor excuse for an expensive jewelry box. In all honesty, I found a better quality box, with a similar style for $39 on sale at my local JC Penny a few days before Christmas.

The first glaring problem was that it was broken! The two slats of wood that supported the second to bottom drawer were broken off. The next thing I noticed was that the engraved plaque had numerous scratches on it, making it look cheap and used. Also, I noticed two parts of the box where the wood was joined together were not finished properly and the flaw was visible through the stain.

I immediately called to complain. When I mentioned the fact that the sticker on the box revealed that the jewelry box was not made in Italy but, instead, China I was told "I don't know why they shipped it with that sticker on it." Seems to me the primary concern was getting caught in a lie, not that the details were wrong. I demanded to speak to Boris, the owner. He offered to have the plaque remade and shipped to me if I was willing to glue the broken parts together. I mentioned that the quality of the box was poor and that I had seen similar boxes in stores for quite a bit less money. He admitted that that particular box was overpriced but he couldn't do anything about it because since he was already buying it at such a high price he had to make some money on it. I told him I wanted to send the box back because I didn't want to give his business my money since I had felt lied to and ripped off.

I'll let you know if and when I get my refund.
