Oscar-winner Anthony Hopkins (The Silence Of The Lambs, Howards End) and Emma Thompson (Howards End, Wit) reunite with the acclaimed Merchant Ivory filmmaking team for this extraordinary and moving story of blind devotion and repressed love. Hopkins stars as Stevens, the perfect English butler--an ideal carried by him to fanatical lengths, as he serves his master Lord Darlington, beautifully played by James Fox (The Servant). Darlington, like many other members of the British establishment in the 1930s, is duped by the Nazis into trying to establish a rapport between themselves and the British government. Thompson stars as the estate s housekeeper, a high-spirited, strong-minded young woman who watches the goings-on upstairs with horror. Despite her apprehensions, she and Stevens gradually fall in love, although neither will admit it, and only give vent to their charged feelings via fierce arguments. Period Drama DVD - While somewhat overshadowed by the box-office performance of Howards End (1992), The Remains of the Day received nine Academy Award nominations and finds Merchant and Ivory at the top of their game. On the eve of World War II, almost everyone in The Remains of the Day seems committed to tired traditions that adhere to a rigid formality. Anthony Hopkins masterfully portrays Stevens' proper exterior, communicating the butler's emotional sterility in "real life" situations through small gestures. Emma Thompson beautifully plays Miss Kenton and once again proves the ideal partner for Hopkins. Their failed relationship (failed because it never even gets started) perfectly underlines the regret that saturates The Remains of the Day. The deeper tragedy, however, lies in the fact that Stevens, Miss Kenton, and Lord Darlington (James Fox) all become conscious of the mistakes they have made, but seem incapable of altering their way of life. James Ivory directed this quietly moving film set just prior to World War II. On the large English estate of Lord Darlington James Fox a disciplined English butler Stevens Anthony Hopkins devotes himself to his duties with rigorous dedication. Like his father Peter Vaughan before him Stevens lives to serve--to bring order and certainty to the estate's minutiae. Though Stevens has the opportunity to break free of this mold in the form of a romance with the spirited housekeeper Miss Kenton Emma Thompson he chooses to remain within the safe structure of the household even one that has misguided loyalties to Nazi Germany. Christopher Reeve and Hugh Grant costar as men hoping to show Lord Darlington the danger of his allegiances. THE REMAINS OF THE DAY was Merchant-Ivory's follow-up to HOWARDS END which also starred Hopkins and Thompson; both actors were nominated for Academy Awards for their roles as dutiful servants in the later film.
