Product Description

It begins in the most boring place in the world: Chickentown, U.S.A. There lives Candy Quackenbush, her heart bursting for some clue as to what her future might hold. When the answer comes, it's not one she expects. Out of nowhere comes a wave, and Candy, led by a man called John Mischief (whose brothers live on the horns on his head), leaps into the surging waters and is carried away.

Where? To the Abarat: a vast archipelago where every island is a different hour of the day, from The Great Head that sits in the mysterious twilight waters of Eight in the Evening, to the sunlit wonders of Three in the Afternoon, where dragons roam, to the dark terrors of Gorgossium, the island of Midnight, ruled over by the Prince of Midnight himself, Christopher Carrion.

Candy has a place in this extraordinary world: she is here to help save the Abarat from the dark forces that are stirring at its heart. Forces older than Time itself, and more evil than anything Candy has ever encountered.

Abarat: Clive Barker For The Kids

Date of Review:  Jul 2, 2003
The Bottom Line: A book of fantasy and adventure for kids, Abarat is a modern day Oz with a dash of Narnia and Wonderland thrown in for good measure.
Review: Who woulda thunk it. Clive Barker, a children/young adult novelist? Will wonders never cease? Actually, in all fairness Barker has walked down this road before with his fantastic novel The Thief of Always. That particular work was just strange...

Abarat by Clive Barker: An aberration conglomeration

Date of Review:  Jan 8, 2005
The Bottom Line: I m still a bit confused (and weirded out) by this book, but I also was very intrigued.
Review: Pick up a copy of Clive Barker s Abarat and it s pretty clear this is not like any YA fantasy you ve read before. Instead of the requisite cheesy sword and sorcery cover, you get a jacket with a patchwork of slightly abstract paintings, brightly...

An Epic Children's Tale, Clive Barker-style

Date of Review:  May 22, 2006
The Bottom Line: What happens when Alice in Wonderland meets a master of adult fantasy/horror... juvenile and adult readers alike are treated to an epic and bizarrely twisted tale.
Review: I read this book several years ago, and though it s not as fresh in my mind as some of my all-time favorites, it still conjures up good reading memories. Though I ve been told numerous times over the years by many friends to read Clive Barker s...

Professional Reviews

Mieville, China, Guardian (London): " Abarat is not a book in which plot is paramount. Above all, this is a deeply lovely catalogue of the strange. Islands carved into colossal heads, giant moths made of coloured ether, words that turn into aeroplanes, tentacled maggot-monsters: they dance past like a carnival, a true surrender to the weird, vastly more inventive than the tired figures that visit some bespectacled boy-wizards. The joy is that all these imagined things are enthusiastically illustrated by Barker himself."
