Product Description

The premium ultrafast telephoto lens for the Nikon autofocus system, the AF-S ED-IF II 400mm f/2.8 is an incredibly robust lens with marked improvements from its predecessor. Using Silent Wave Motor technology to drive autofocus operation, focus can be changed from infinity to the shortest distance in 0.27 seconds. Even more incredible, however, is the performance of the new-generation AF-S lenses when tracking subjects with erratic motion. Slick as silk, directional changes are accomplished with the ease of a jungle cat. It is this trait which will impress those whove never used the AF-S motors; while AF-D is quite competent for hunting images of fast subjects quickly approaching the lens, in unpredictable conditions they are totally outclassed by AF-S. An ideal lens for a sports or wildlife photographer, it will work on bodies as old as the 50s workhorse Nikon F to the most current F5(and everything in between).

Good value in a pancake Nikkor lens?

Date of Review:  Jun 27, 2003
The Bottom Line: I recommend it with some reservations due to its cost and relatively slow aperture, and its too small to be practical focus and aperture rings.
Review: I bought this lens to use with my FM3a mainly because I thought it would be a killer combination of a very compact lens with a somewhat compact, traditional camera. To be honest, I also liked the look of the "silver" lens on the "silver" body.

Nikkor 400mm 2.8 AF-S

Date of Review:  Nov 20, 2000
Review: I've had my 400mm 2.8 AF-S Nikkor for a year and a half. It's a very good lens, excellant sharpness and detail. This is a heavy lens, at almost 15 pounds, yet it's a little lighter than their older AF-I Lens. I can hand hold this lens for quick...
