An Ordinary Book By An Extraordinary Writer

Date of Review:  Apr 4, 2005
The Bottom Line: Not bad at all, just not up to the Gaiman-brilliant writing style some readers may have already discovered. A good book to start with if you've never read his work.
Review: There is no denying Neil Gaiman s writing skill. Acclaimed for his Sandman comics and a hilarious collaboration with Terry Pratchett called Good Omens, Gaiman has also won enough awards to make his mantle groan. Hugos, Nebulas and Locus awards are...

The Bottom Line: A glorious, well-written fairy-tale for the child inside all of us.
Review: I love fairy-tales. I really do. I love princesses and magic and dragons and fairies and dragons and all of those absolutely wonderful things that you're expected to grow out of by the time you're at least nine or ten. And I tried - but I discovered...

Do You Think You're Under a Spell?

Date of Review:  Jul 5, 2000
Review: Neil Gaiman has a preoccupation with old fairy tales and nursery rhymes. Thankfully, he seems to always realize exactly what each tales needs to make it fresh and interesting again. Such is the case with Stardust (1999), the epic adventure of a man...

Professional Reviews

San Francisco Book Review: "Gaiman knows how to make this kind of storytelling look easy. "Stardust avoids sounding too precious or knowing, and the prose strikes just the right notes of humor and romance. Vess' generously detained paintings perfectly capture the beauty, oddness, and terror of Faerie."
