Throne of Blood

Throne of Blood

Product Description

Akira Kurosawa's stunning reconception of Shakespeare's MACBETH is a dark samurai drama, set in feudal Japan. As the film begins, two soldiers--Washizu (Toshirt Mifune) and Miki (Minoru Chiaki)--find themselves lost in a dense forest during a powerful thunderstorm. Seemingly unable to leave the woods, they encounter a ghostly old woman who predicts that Washizu will soon rise to power. At the goading of his ruthless wife, Asaji (Isuzu Yamada), Washizu embarks on a murderously ambitious path and quickly fulfills the prophecy. However, his ascension is cursed by his brutal actions and soon opposition arises to challenge his blood-stained rule.

One of the finest Shakespeare adaptations to appear in any medium, Kurosawa's THRONE OF BLOOD is covered in an entrancingly macabre web. The always-amazing Mifune gives one of his greatest performances as the haunted yet unrelenting Lord Washizu, while Yamada portrays the eeriest version of Lady Macbeth to ever grace the screen or stage. A master of reinte...

Macbeth with samurai

Date of Review:  Oct 8, 2003

Review: You may have noticed that in my previous reviews for a Kurosawa film I've compared his films favorably to the films that he was to later influence. This is because Akira Kurosawa is a director who has influenced a large portion of the films you may...

Something Wicked This Way Comes: Kurosawa's Throne Of Blood

The Bottom Line: Who would have thought the Bottom Line had so much blood in him?
Review: I spent much of May teaching "Hamlet" to a Grade 12 English class. After getting over the cognitive dissonance that it was me teaching them about the Bard, and his great Danish prince, we had much fun dissecting the play's many themes, enjoying the...

Shakespeare's Macbeth Goes Samurai in Kurosawa's Throne of Blood

Date of Review:  Nov 25, 2007
The Bottom Line: Throne of Blood is an Eerie, Provocative Take on Shakespeare's Macbeth by Akira Kurosawa w/ a Mesmerizing Performance from Toshiro Mifune.
Review: While Akira Kurosawa has been known for putting a lot of elements from other worlds into his films, notably samurai movies. His love for American westerns and such helped reinvent the samurai picture, notably his 1954 masterpiece The Seven Samurai...
