Author's Review
I first bought Airline Tycoon two years ago and playing computer games has never been the same since. The point of the game is to build the best and most successful airline while competeing against three other computer players. The game can be operated in a scenario mode giving you different objectives to complete or a free play mode, allowing you to play for as long as you want.
What's best about this game? How about the fact that the game is based on a start up airline trying to get through the struggles of expanding in a constantly changing market with competitors biting at your heels, and that's to say the least. You first start out by choosing between four different airlines, each cleverly named and matched with a proper color and logo. After that each airline is assigned two offices on the second floor, one check-in desk and one gate. In your own office you already have two planes to start out with and a few million to get you going. From there it is time to expand your airline, go the indirect route, and fly hundreds of charter or cargo flights everyday, or plan out your airline for success ahead of time by renting out routes to and from the home airport you chose and to connecting hubs, or do both to create the most biggest and ugliest looking route system ever seen.
But best of all everything happens before your eyes. Watch as passengers enter the airport two hours before departure, and check-in at your airline's desk. Then watch as they mingle out the shops or bank. And finally watch as the proceed to the gate area and board the plane 30 min. before departure. Wave goodbye as you watch your plane take-off on the runway in the distance, but wait what's that another plane has landed and watch as passengers unboard your plane and see their reactions after a 10 hour flight with two stop overs, they will then sleepishly pick up there luggage and exit the airport, all right before your eyes. The game actually lets you peak in on the passengers as they are at the airport, but not only that there are three other airlines sharing the same facilities so there will be a constant flow of passengers moving through the airport.
The game let's you completely customize your airline. For example, do you like passengers to sit on hard wood seats and be bored so you could save thousands, or are you for taking the JetBlue approach and decide to give everyone leather seats and free TV? Should the meal be a bag of chips or a lobster dinner? Should you charge $100 for coach or $1000 for first class. It is all up to you and that's what makes the game interesting.
