Baldur's Gate: Awesome Game, but Could Have Been Better
Date of Review: Jan 11, 2000
I love D & D. Always have. I was nearly addicted to the Goldbox games. Baldur's Gate is a worthy successor, but I think they tried to do much with it. So far, Computer Role-Playing Games (CRPG's) have been unable to be both good single player and good multi-player products. Unfortunately, Baldur's Gate tried to straddle the fence and in so doing, took away from the over-all game.
Baldur's Gate excels in atmosphere: graphics, sounds, story...all very addictive. I always wanted to explore a bit more, find another item. "Just one more quest" was my mantra.
I think the game would have been much better though, had they stuck to the single player method. For one thing, they incorporated "Real time combat" into the game, which is a mess when you're trying to control several characters. The reason they did this, I'm sure, is for the multi-player side of the game. "The box says you can pause it!" Well, yes, you can. This adds to the click-fest feel of the game, however. To add insult to injury, in multi-player mode if one player pauses, they all pause. Whether you want to or not.
My final verdict? It's a good game, but they should have stuck to one thing. You can do one thing well or two things decently...
