Author's Review
My recommendation is simple, and based on simple taster's experience: Belvedere is the absolute best martini vodka I have had! This is the single smoothest vodka I have tried, with an almost thick texture. Goes down good!
Like many of you, I have had to climb the Vodka ladder; in college, when I was poor, I drank Popov. Yes, Popov. I can admit this now, only because I have moved on. Some might say my drinking Popov destroys all my credibility, but believe me, it wasn't a taste choice, it was financial. Back then, Smirnoff's was "the good stuff", but frankly, I found none of these drinkable unless masked heavily with mixers.
After college, I graduated to what I thought was the best, Absolut. Still not that drinkable, though, to my mind. I shopped around a little too, with other suggestions such as Stoli. Doing this, I found Ketel One, and this was at that time the smoothest vodka I had had (although it still had a bite), and made the best martini to date. I was sold, and there was only Ketel One in my freezer for a long time.
But then, one night, I was at a bar, ordering my vodka martini, dirty, and I heard the recommendation of Belvedere. When I tried it, I thought I had found the Martini Holy Grail, and in fact, I still think I did. This is without question the smoothest martini vodka. However, Belvedere is a good bit pricier than Ketel One -- $30 for Belvedere, but only about $20 for Ketel One, which I consider a close second, so I keep either one of these on hand.
