I have owned the Canon EOS 5D and 24-105 lens for over a year and I continue to be extremely well pleased. The camera records beautiful images with little digital noise even at ISO levels as high as 1600. The full frame sensor allows for true wide angle photography. Tremendous difference with the 24-105 when compared to a 1.6 magnification like the 40D. At 105mm with the IS turned on it is possible to get sharp images at shutter speeds as slow as 1/15th second with good technique! The 5D was once criticized for dust problems but I have had very minimal issues by using a rocket blower EVERY time I change lenses. Only one wet cleaning in the year that I have owned the camera. The 24-105 is a very fine lens but not in the league of 70-200 f2.8L IS and certainly not the 85 f1.2L for sharpness. Focuses fast. Very good walk around lens. f4.0 is slightly limiting for background bokeh. Camera flash synch max of 1/200 sec is also slightly limiting but not oppressively. (My purchase price will look odd because I bought the camera and lens separately with the lens purchase being before they were packaged as a kit) When combined with an extension tube this combination also makes a great macro outfit. Some users may be bothered by the absence of a built in flash. I do not find that a problem at all as I find that built in flash produces only very harsh, flat light with terrible red eye problems.
