Author's Review
I got this for my b-day, mainly to capture our upcoming child in all her tiny glory. I have played with the camera extensively to be able to understand all it can do.
First, the good (which far outweigh the bad). The camera is small, which I was looking for. If you have one of those high-end digital cameras, it is probably bigger than this VC. The widescreen recording is great esp. if you have a widescreen TV! Next, digital video is great on tapes that are 1/2 the size of my cell phone. Also, the ability to record straight to my computer, very easily, with the Firewire (IEEE 1394) output ensures that the video quality is not compromised. You just need a lot of hard drive space. Another cool feature is the SD memory card slot, which enables you to take still photos or record video on to your memory card.
Now, the bad, which are minor. First, the still photos on the SD memory card look grainy printed; that is, unless there is a higher quality photo setting that I am not aware of. Not a big deal though, as this is my videocamera, not my still camera. Just nice to know I can take pictures if I need to in a pinch. Also, the fade-in and digital effects are nice and very fun, but what is semi-annoying is that you have to push a button below the screen before you hit record. In other words, you can't simply turn on the "fade" function and have it automatically fade in and fade out. You have to turn on the fade of your choosing; then hit the "Digital Effects" button; then hit "record;" then hit the "Digital Effects" button to turn the fade out on; then hit "record" again to stop and fade out. A minor thing, but the thing is so small, having to push that little button all the time is awkward.
Overall though, I love it and am glad with my decision after looking at comparable Sony, JVC, and Samsung units. It has all the bells and whistles and delivers good quality home video.
