Casio's Flagship Pathfinder PAG40-3V
Date of Review: Jul 17, 2005
The Bottom Line: Perfect watch for outdoor use, young people learn from using this watch, old guys too. Digitalfoto.com was a fantastic source.
Folks, this is a large watch, so be prepared! The obvious reason for it's size is visibility and it has it! I have people commenting on how they can read my watch across the aisle in class, planes and in cars.
My first triple sensor pathfinder was purchased in 1999 or earlier, I just can't remember. I had never seen one, I just saw the spec's in a magazine ad and had to have it. The features were what sold me because at the time I was doing a lot of camping and Kayaking. As a scout leader this watch was always of interest to my boys.
The main features I bought for were altimeter, barometer, thermometer, stopwatch, and daily alarms.
The compass was always dead on. A favorite yearly scout trip was to motorboat from charleston sc up the river and through the canal locks into Lake Moultrie. One year part of my group were lucky enough to be on a brand new very very expensive 28 ft fishing boat. The owners scoffed at the notion of a wristwatch being able to match the thousand dollar compass mounted on the bridge but it kept up with it to the degree!
As far as the other functions go, here is a brief review.
altimeter-always very accurate
barometer-trend graph was most helpful in predicting weather
changes.
compass-nothin' but cool.
daily alarms- super handy for maintaining a busy schedule.
Years later (these days) my old pathfinder has attracted much interest because of the latest fashion trend for big watches.
I bought the new pathfinder because of a sensor failure and my failing eyesight. I was not disappointed by the visibility of the display in daylight hours, however the night lite (auto lite) was better in the old version. Also the duration of the light is too short (1 sec vs 5 sec)
In fact, my only complaint is the backlight is horrible and I wish it were comparable to the Timex Iniglo. That being said, I would not hesitate to suggest this cool watch to anyone who could imagine using advanced measurement functions. I might add that this version of the pag40 (3v)
comes with a nylon leather type band that makes it look a bit cooler that the standard black resin. If you wonder why the band is so large, the reason is so one can fasten the watch over a jacket or coat and get readings unaltered by body heat.
