I myself am a big fan of Squaresoft RPG games. Chrono Trigger is really the only game that can set the standards of the term RPG. The amazing soundtrack, story line, and a real-time battle system are very unique. No game ever has over 10 endings from one story line. Its soundtrack system is so unique that the background music (BGM) actually sets the mood of the environment. Addition to that, each character has his/her own melody. Ending of a game is usually a movie-like scene. This game however, player can actually interact in the ending. This is really a big breakthrough in the ending scheme. There are definitely more reason why this game is worth the cost (it cost $89.99 USD when I got my copy).
Comparing this game to others, Chrono Trigger simply is better than any of them. No matter graphics, sounds, and or ending(s). Chrono Trigger tends to be a more user-friendly game comparing to others. With other RPG, you may encounter a battle randomly, but in Chrono Trigger, you can actually avoid the enemies so that you don't even need to battle. This seems to fit the term real-time battle system. Also, its dual-tech and triple-tech system is very unique. Story line is also very important. The story line of Chrono Trigger is very well done. It is so well plotted that different time era events can be linked into one incident. Just like the Rainbow Shell accusation against the king. First you find the shell in 600AD, and then the shell is gone in 1000AD.
The ONLY game that comes close to Chrono Trigger is probably Final Fantasy III (Final Fantasy VI Japanese). Although Final Fantasy III also has a very well plotted story line, but compared to Chrono Trigger it is not as well done.
