neat grill

Date of Review: May 31, 2007

The Bottom Line:  If you need a portable gas grill or have storage issues, this is the perfect grill.
I'm a charcoal grill person myself, but there are times when I could use a gas grill. Portablility and storage are major issues for me, so I was really impressed when I saw this grill in action last year.

I read the reviews of the other portalbe grills and decided this was the best for my needs. I would have prefered the other coleman roadtrip with the seperate stand, but couldn't find that at any local dealers. This was the next best choice and was in plentiful supply at my local Sports Authority, Dick's Sporting goods and Linen n Things.

I got a chance to examine the Webber and Thermos portable grills. The Thermos model is griddle top only. The Webber is probably a better grill, but not as portable and storable.

I noticed the display model had grills on both sides, not the spilt griddle/grill mentioned in other reviews. The salesman confirmed that was the case with the ones they had in stock. I noticed the model at Linen n Things had tool hangers on the tray and a different latch. It was also $169 after a $30 rebate. The model at Dicks and SA had the tool hangers on the face of the grill and was on sale for $149.

Since I need the grill for a party next week, I grabbed one from Dicks and tried it out for diner tonight. The salesman helped me pick out the tank hose while the still had them in stock. I should have grabbed a can of the pam for grills too.

The grill was easy to set up. The only assembly was attaching the wheels (wrench included) and the pull handle, which snapes in.

The regulator screws onto the back and a small tank support is right behind it that swings out when needed. It really did have grill grates on both sides. They didn't have the griddle grates in stock, but this have the stove grates. After reading the directions, I now know that you can't use the grill tops for pots..unless you don't mind voiding the warranty.

Anyway, the grill sets up very easy and the burners fired up with the push of the igniter. I decided to grill a couple lamb steaks at low with the lid closed. My friend had cooked a roast this way on low and several other reviews mentioned that it works well as long as you keep the heat low. It worked for me also. I didn't bother to do foil on the bottom, but that cleaned up with a few paper towels. The grill grate was a different story. Shouda used the pam. I got the worst of it off with hot water and a scrub sponge.

The real test will be cooking for a dozen next week.
