Author's Review
With a great cast, a great score, and a great director, this movie was set-up perfectly. Would it make us laugh and cry for the right reasons, or the wrong ones? A very notable writer has called it a magically compelling movie, and I think it deserves that title, and then some.
At the beginning of the movie we find ourselves watching Bill Murray scrambling to catch a train, the same train that Adrien Brody is trying to catch. Brody beats Murry to the train, and Murray is left in the dust. Say what you will about Wes Anderson, but you can't deny that this is one of the better scenes you'll see all year.
The story revolves around a dysfunctional family, in which Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman, and Owen Wilson play three brothers who haven't spoken in a year and are trying to re-unite there family. The plan to re-unite the brothers, is set up by Wilson's character. His plan is to ride the Indian train, The Darjeeling Limited, to all sorts of spiritual places, and what ensues is one of the better stories of the year. Owen Wilson's character is the "motherly" type, if you will, always trying to do what is in the best interest of his brothers, but much to there chagrin. Schwartzman's character is coming off a long relationship, and Schwartzman is having a hard time coping with the loss of his ex, while Brody's character plays the calm, collected guy- who is about to have a kid.
The movie opens with the short-film Hotel Chevalier, which really adds depth to Schwartzman's character, explaining his relationship with his ex. Again, Wes Anderson shines, as the short-film really help the movie.
The score is absolutely fantastic, with a lot of interesting Indian numbers, as well as some French rock and roll. It really sets the movie off well, and will keep you whistling it until the next great movie score you hear.
The cast is obviously fantastic in The Darjeeling Limited, as Owen Wilson, Adrien Brody, and Jason Schwartzman all shine equally. They are a very believable family, and the things that say and do(and take) will lead to very funny, and at times heartwarming, breath of fresh air from the typical movie.
If you're the typical Wes Anderson fan boy, you won't be disappointed in the least, and if you're not, you won't be disappointed either. This movie is, undoubtedly, one of my favorite movies of the year. If you enjoy the human comedy, and a heartwarming story, this movie is perfect for you. My overall grade is an A-, and enough cannot be said about the great cast, great directing, and great story in Darjeeling Limited.
