Author's Review
DeKuyper Is famous for it's schnapps, well...for mass producing them anyway. So naturally, when I went looking for an apple schnapps to put in the party punch for my "let's just surprise myself cause no one else is gonna" birthday party this year, I wanted cheap, yet still fairly tasty...and there was DeKuyper! I was actually looking for their Apple Barrel Schnapps, and decided to take a chance with the DeKuyper Sour Apple Pucker Schnapps. I mean hey, sometimes different is good right? Well, for once that saying was completely true...and I'm glad I made that last minute decision.
So, let's get on with it and I'll tell you all about the DeKuyper Apple Pucker Schnapps...
The bottle looks just like all Dekuyper's schnapps bottles, so there's nothing worth mentioning there. Of course, this schnapps is only 30 proof...a little too low for me, so I'll have to take a point away for that. On the pour, there's a good bit of viscosity here...quite a bit of cling to the glass. Pretty average thickness for a schnapps though, as they all tend to have quite a bit of sugar in them. The color is a very pretty translucent green, so I'm looking forward to a green apple flavor.
The smell...Crab apples! My grandmother had a crab apple tree in her yard while I was growing up, this is exactly the scent I'm getting...and believe me...I've been sick off her crab apples often enough to know what I'm talkin about here...<shiver>
The taste...OMG...it's Gram's crab apples...hmm, that sick thought just came back to me, maybe I should reconsider...Nah...this is gonna work out just fine as long as I don't overdo it. I get the sour flavor first (just needs salt...really)...oh, there's the sweet apple flavor now, it hits with the aftertaste. Strong crab apple flavor here, hmm...I wonder if I should try it with salt? Couldn't hurt...let's see shall we?
WOW! The salt takes the sour away just like it does for crab apples...Jeez, maybe I should patent this...oh man...this is GOOD! Okay...this may not make it into the punch, I haven't tasted this particular flavor in years!
My recommendations...GET SOME! The DeKuyper Sour Pucker Schnapps tastes just like crab apples, no alcohol flavor whatsoever...add some salt if you don't like sour stuff, it takes the sour away completely. If you've had crab apples as a kid, you're gonna love the memories, and you won't get that crab apple belly ache from eating too many. If you've never had crab apples before...this is as close as it gets, and it's wonderful!
I'll leave you with some recipes for this wonderful schnapps, and start with the single version of my birthday punch for this year...
