Author's Review
I have been a Drew Carey fan for many a years. I was recently browsing around my neighborhood Borders Books and Music store. As I usually do, I headed straight to the bargain book table. There I found Drew Carey's Dirty Jokes and Beer. I decided to buy it since it was only three dollars. I went home and immeditaly began to read it.
Now, mind you, I am a HUGE fan of Drew Carey. I love his work. I feel that he is the perfect kind of comedian...like "the guy next door" kind of material. I was struggling trying to get through this book.
At the beggining of each chapter there was a joke. This was a great idea, expect probably most of the people that read it had already heard the joke. But nevertheless, it was a good idea. I have a feeling that Drew had a few beers while he was writing about his past, otherwise he would have known better to actually sell this to the public.
Inside the chapter was a bunch of nonsense. He was talking about his past experiences in his life. While it was interesting, there was something that was bothering me. I was not dieing to turn the page to see what happened next.
At the end of the book, he had inserted a few short stories that he had written years ago. I was amazed. They were very good. The conclusion that I came to when I finished was, I think he was trying to hard. Most of the book was pretty much him just writing down his routine. In my opinion, Drew Carey is more of a spoken performer. If he were reading this book aloud to me, I would have loved it.
Now I know some of you are going to say 'well where do you get off ragging on Drew, you're not much of a writer either' And you're right. To say that I'm not much of a writer is an overstatment. I'm horrible. But you would think that someone of Drew Careys' standards would have somebody tell him if his book sucked or not. I will still remain to be a big fan of Drew, but I will definitly think twice about reading another autobiography type book about him.
