Author's Review
Dr.Dre's much anticipated album, Chronic 2001, definately silenced all of the critics and older fans who said that he had lost his production skill and was slowly fading away in the rap genre. The music on this album is unmatched and it set a new standard for West-Coast hip-hop. Everything about it is almost perfect.
.)"Lolo (Intro)" - The intro is just using the "deep note" that starts off movies. Then Tray Dee and Xzibit introduce Dre and thats it. *****
.)"The Watcher" - This song is Dre discussing the past few troubled years of rap music and everything from Eazy-E to Snoop Dogg to 2Pac comes up. *****
.)"F_ck You" - 2/3 of Tha Eastsidaz, Snoop and Tray Dee help out Dre on this track. The title explains the meaning.****
.)"Still D.R.E." - Still D.R.E. became a huge hit. It's very catchy. The piano and signature Dre g-funk make for a perfect song. Snoop is here to team up and they're telling you that the doctor hasn't changed one bit.*****
.)"Big Egos" - Not anything special, Hittman is featured here.***
.)"Xxplosive" - This is my favorite song on the album. It has an unlikely guitar riff but it blends in perfectly. Don't skip this song!*****
.)"What's The Difference" - Aggressive tune. Eminem is here with Xzibit. They're awesome together.
.)"Bar One" - An interlude skit. ***
.)"Light Speed" - This is a wierd song. Just listen to a line of lyrics and you'll know what im talking about: "Light speed, give me some of that new sh*t, the chronic iced-t" No clue what they're talking about but its a fun song. ****
.)"Forgot About Dre" - Another huge radio hit off 2001, Eminem is on it and makes a good performance. Stringed instruments are included.*****
.)"The Next Episode" - The long awaited follow up to the legendary "Nuthin But A G Thang". Snoop, of course, is here.
Very good song. *****
.)"Lets Get High" - A gangster party anthem with a rising chorus. This track has this sci-fi feel to it that most of the album does.****
.)"B*tch N*****" - Very laid back. W/Snoop.****
.)"The Car Bomb" - Violent skit about a couple getting into their car and...you guessed it.***
.)"Murder Ink" - Hard hitting song with the typical subject but Dre,Hittman& Ms.Roq seem angry.****
.)"Ed-ucation" - Nothing special. From here some tracks on the album turn into take it or leave it songs. Better than filler, just not up to par with the beginning of the album.***
.)"Some L.A. N*****" - Better than Ed-ucation. A laid back anthem for the West-Coast.****
.)"Pause 4 Porno" - VERY explicit skit. This is basically listening to people banging eachother very loudly. Although, the end is funny. **
.)"Housewife" - This song has a 70s rhythm which makes it interesting, but the tired, tired subject matter brings it down.**
.)"Ackrite" - Okay song, nothing great here.***
.)"Bang Bang" - Kick starts the album again. Slamming track with Hittman.*****
.)"The Message" - The best song on the latter half of the album. This is about Dre's late brother who died as a part of the violence in urban areas. Mary J. Blige sings the chorus.*****
