Fallout: Still One of the Best!
Date of Review: Jun 12, 2007
The Bottom Line: Fallout is a game I would recommend to anyone who enjoys Role-playing, action and well-developed characterisation.
Fallout brings to life the desruction of nuclear war, with humanity trying to find peace and survive in a post-apocalytic world. They are faced with the fear of starvation or dehydration, or fear of death and radiation above the surface.
Fallout is definitely one of the greatest role-playing games ever made, despite its release having been back in the 90s. This game has managed to hold onto its popularity, even with the hundreds of competiting titles to have been released since. Fallout has also been popular enough to warrent sequels, with a sequel on PC and another on console, each with their own unique appeal.
In this over-the-top third person role playing game, the survival of your colony depends upon you. When facing starvation in your underground bunker, you are left with no choice but to venture above ground and seek down the part needed to ensure your people's survival. So you risk death by entering the radioactive-tainted world above, where destruction has reigned supreme and horrifying creatures now roam. You must brave the new world, form alliances and perform favors, all while defending yourself from monsters or raiders who you meet in your travels. But you must not fail to find the chip... or your people will die!
There are different difficulty levels to choose from, making Fallout great for all gaming experience levels, and several characters to choose from, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. You will also find a huge range of weapons and useful items to help you with your plight.
Combat involves an auto-targetting feature to allow you to lock onto enemies and take in turns of inflicting damage. You also have the ability to target on different enemies during a combat mode, without being locked onto one particular enemy at once.
The gaming graphics are of high-quality, despite the advances in technology since its release. Not only this, but the soundtrack is suited to the story, with an introduction filled with pop culture images of the past, and a 30's style gramaphone tune playing in the background, to instantly have you hooked on this game.
Fallout is the type of game to appeal to many different gamers, with action, role-playing, character development and history. It is easy for beginners, but challenging for the more expert game player as well. Fallout will have you playing for hours, and is definately a strong contender in its genre, even put against its more recent competitors.
