Author's Review
Far Cry has been touted as the best FPS since Half-life. Well, I'd like to correct that misconception, Half-life it's not. It's BETTER - but then that's what you get for 5 years worth of technological advance.
The game-play is flawless and expansive. Stealth and lateral thinking are suitably rewarded as tactical advantage is gained in preparation for the inevitable head-on confrontations. The battles can be frantic and you really have to think on your feet in order to take maximum advantage of the terrain. But with a bit of careful planning I've so far been able to keep those power-ups topped up at key points in the game. I can't wait for the 1.2 patch to become available, but when it does I will not use the manual save option. Half the fun of Far Cry is to make it to the next save point with enough left in you to carry on.
Graphically Far Cry is simply stunning, even on the lower configuration options. Incidentally, don't pay too much attention to the minimum spec for the higher level configurations - it's worth experimenting to get th best performance out of your PC. I have a fairly work-a-day config, AMD2400 with NVidia Geforce 4MX and 512 ram, yet if I keep my PC regularly maintained and run as few background tasks as possible, I can comfortably get away with the highest default configuration with no lags.
The audio quality is equally impressive and startlingly realistic, both the weapon, vehicle and machinery noise and the environmental effects.
In fact I have never seen so much detail go into a single game in my life. I am constantly surprised. Last night I chased a cowardly mercenary into the sea before shooting him in back. He died in the water and I was amazed to see his lifeless body floating and actually bobbing gently with the waves.
As far as I am concerned, Far Cry is the most complete, most exciting gaming experience to date bar none (not even the inestimable Half-Life). The ONLY fault I have found, however, is that occasionally bullet casings ejected from the vehicle mounted guns sometimes remain hovering in mid-air after the gun has been fired. However, that those casings are there in in the first place is testimony to the incredible detail and thought that has been put into this game.
