Not Worth the Money

This is a big, heavy shredder that is poorly constructed, & does not work as well as shredders costing much less money. When this shredder arrived, one of the door hinges was broken, due to poor packing & the particle board construction of the cabinet. Rather than lug this big & heavy object (70+ pounds) back down the stairs, I fixed the door myself, by drilling new holes & using longer screws (the hinge screws are flimsy for a door of this weight). I was surprised to find that a shredder costing $600+ came with a cheap cardboard box paper receptacle inside; I had expected a sturdy lightweight plastic. My smaller, much cheaper GBC comes with a heavy duty, high impact plastic receptacle.
The shredder works well for most paper, although it has a rather narrow neck for a shredder of this size & cost. It shreds automatically when a piece of light colored paper is inserted into the neck. For some reason, the shredder doesn't work automatically if you insert dark paper, possibly because it relies on reflection of light, & dark paper doesn't reflect light as well? If you shred a lot of dark paper, I recommend a shredder that's activated by pressure feed, not light reflection, something I didn't know when I bought this.
It jams often, & the blades become impacted with pieces of shredded paper. Although it has instructions for maintenance & cleaning, I don't believe that a high cost shredder should have to be cleared of paper so often. This Fellowes shredder again compares poorly with my small GBC shredder, which never needs to be cleared of paper & needs no maintenance at all.
I've owned ny GBC shredder longer, & it's still in great shape, but my Fellowes needs repair (forget it, I'll replace it with a more powerful, better constructed, & maintenance free GBC unit).
