Nice, compact, and handy

Date of Review: Sep 29, 2006

The Bottom Line:  Buy it. Rugged enough to keep in the car in the event of an accident, or if I see something I simply wanted a good picture of.
I wanted a camera I could keep in the car, and being an owner of another Fuji camera (S5100), I thought I'd stay with a brand that I had confidence in. When my wife asked me what I wanted for Father's Day, I suggested the Finepix A400. The first thing I did was to take a bunch of totally
random pictures the first day (scenery, people, closeups, with and without flash). Everything looked quite acceptable. The next day I changed out the batteries, but not because they needed replacing. They were still working fine. The camera would spend most of its time in my car, and I installed a set of Energizer E^2 to see what kind of battery life I would get. Since then I've taken upwards of one-hundred, fifty shots of which about half were with flash. The batteries are still good.

Again, I keep it in the car, even during the hot Texas summer. The manufacturer recommends that this NOT be done, but thus far I've not had a problem. I am relating my experience, not recommending that it is okay to do this.

Using the camera is quite intuitive, and the controls and markings are easy to understand. The only downside is that the digital viewfinder is hard to see in bright sunlight, but that is a problem common to most digital cameras. I use the optical viewfinder in this situation.
