GPX Forgot to Test Reliability and Lost my Reliability as a Returning Customer
Date of Review: Feb 10, 2003
The Bottom Line: Look for other quality MP3 CD Players, don't let the cheap price and great looks fool you into buying this unreliable unit.
Why Did I Buy It?
I wanted a MP3 CD Player in order to listen to music for many hours without having to swap CDs. I commute for about an hour so this is important, because I would have to swap CDs while driving (very unsafe) if I wanted another CD. I went by a store in the mall and saw an MP3 CD Player for only $100 (At that time many MP3 CD Players were expensive. I loved the design, it looked cool, so there I was, pulling out $100 + tax to the cashier and was on my way out of the store.
The Glorious Journey Up the Stairs Until It Missed a Step and Fell All the Way Down
At first, when I started using it; I loved it! I had a blast listening to many songs without end! The ESP handled all my music quite nicely. Although, ESP had an occasional problem with synchronizing the music it gathered; not to mention, it would occasionally skip even with ESP on. It seems as if the unit has problems reading from ESP memory. The searching of files was good enough, but not excellent. The DBBS (Dynamic Bass Boost) was even good. But then, after about a year, the unit started operated erratically.
List of Erratic Operations
-Would not power up sometimes.
-ESP would not function and songs will not even play with ESP on.
-When selecting a track the CD Player would not read the selected song. In order to make it work it had to be powered off and then back on and just press play.
-MP3s caused major delays in loading and some would not load
Features (from GPX's official web site)
Full-function CD/CD-R/CD-RW/MP3 player
Dot-matrix LCD display shows two lines of MP3 text
24-track programming
120-second ESP for MP3, 45-second ESP for CD
BBS: Bass Boost System
AROS: Anti-Rolling System
DC/line-out jacks
Stereo headphones
Uses two (2) "AA" batteries
The "full-function" player doesn't work with some CDs. The head phones are cheap sounding. This unit also makes sure it uses 2 "AA" because it only lasts for about 2 hours.
At The Bottom of the Stairs
I just wasted $100 on an expensive paperweight. I would wish GPX would refund my money, but their warranty only lasts for 90 days. As if they know that the products don't last for more than 90 days.
At least the instructional manual was decent.
