Author's Review

Hocus Pocus is a 96 minute comedy and family film released in July of 1993 by Walt Disney. Walt Disney produced another hit with this movie. Hocus Pocus was rated PG because it is suitable for all ages. There is no bad language nor nudity.

This movie revolves around a 300 year old legend about three witches. The three witches were sisters and when finally caught were hung by the neck until dead in Salem Massachusetts. However, the oldest sister put a spell on them right before they died. The spell says that when a virgin comes along and lights the black candle the witches will come back to life. You learn about this story in the very beginning of the movie and it unfolds into more detail.

Bette MIdler plays Winifred Sanderson also called Winnie by her sisters. She is the eldest of the three and she has a wonderful spell book that she uses to create her spells. This book is like her pet and comes when she calls. Winnie also had two buck teeth and well looks like she could be a few hundred years old. I have to say Winnie is the smartest of the three sisters.

Sarah Jessica Parker plays Sarah Sanderson the youngest sister. Now this woman is a real blonde and the jokes would all fit her perfectly. The only thing is she has a lovely voice and she sings a song that puts all children into a trance. This song allows her to lead the children any where she wants them. I also have to note
that Sarah is a terrible flirt and will be easily distracted from her task by any man.

Kathy Najimy plays Mary Sanderson the middle sister. Mary has a special gift to sniff out children. They can not hide from her because she is better than having a blood hound around. She is also a little on the weird side too.

Emily Binx played by Amanda Shepherd was the little girl they took and sucked the life out of so they could grow younger. Her younger brother Thackery Binx is played by Sean Murray. He could not save his sister and the witches punished him for bringing the townspeople down on them. Young Thackery Binx was turned into a black cat and was made immortal. This means for 300 years he has had to live with the fact he could not save his sister. However, he does guard the museum the town set up for the tourists so that no one will light the black candle and bring back the three sisters.

After you see the back ground story you will then be transported to the year 1993 where a school teacher is telling the story of the Sanderson sisters to her class. There are many who live in the town who believe in the story. However, there is one boy who recently moved to Salem from California who thinks the story is some kind of fictional story. As the movie goes on modern day people will meet 300 year old witches and it will be a great adventure for three young children who must try and save the towns children.

Max Dennison played by Omri Katz is the young man from California who thinks the sisters are nothing but a big joke till he actually meets them.

Thora Birch plays Dani Dennison Max's little sister. She has her older brother wrapped around her little finger however, he is trying to impress a girl and Dani will help him.

Vinessa Shaw plays Allison. Allison has lived in the town of Salem all her life and she believes in the tale of the Sanderson sisters. She takes Max and Dani to the museum that was set up to bring in tourists to the town. The only problem was that strange and weird things were happening to people who went into the museum so they had to shut it down.

My Opinion:

I have to say this is one of the funniest movies I have seen in a while. Bette Midler does a great performance as Winnie and keeps you laughing all the way through. Sarah Jessica Parker brings new meaning to bimbo in her character as Sarah. Kathy Najimy will keep you in stitches too as the middle sister who fumbles around smelling for children. I think once you watch this movie you will want to own it so you can watch it over and over again. Hocus Pocus has a very good story line and the characters in this movie all well played out.

I have to say that the funnies part in the movie is after Winnie brings a man called Bill Butcherson back to life to kill Max. Billy has not been able to talk since Winnie got angry with him over three hundred years ago and sewed his mouth shut. When Billy finally gets his mouth unsown he starts spouting of insult to Winnie and then he walks away arm in arm with Max to safety. This part of the movie will keep you laughing I promise.
