Very good for the price, especially in small spaces
Date of Review: Aug 7, 2005
The Bottom Line: If you have a small space and small budget, this is a great fan -- lots of features and not a lot of shortcomings.
We live in a very small apartment (total 700 sq ft) and bought this fan to use in our living room. It was a good buy for us, not only because of the price ($30 at Bed, Bath & Beyond), but also because it is easily portable and doesn't take up much space.
When on the oscillation setting, the grille rotates, not the fan itself, so it is good for small spaces in that sense. If also set to the highest breeze setting, the air movement the fan provides is pretty good, although probably not as good if the room is large. The remote control is probably most convenient for the couch potatoes of the world, but it's not really all that necessary for most people, especially if the room is small anyway.
One feature this fan has that I've never seen before is the option to have a breeze setting where it's intermittent between a full-on breeze and a low breeze -- supposedly to simulate the wind. Personally I find this annoying because it sounds like the fan is shutting down, and then suddenly starting back up again, which is more distracting than simply having it on one constant setting. But, that's just me. :)
As for the noise level, I would say it's about average. One benefit of having the oscillating grille is that it doesn't shutter and/or squeak when it moves, which is a problem I've always had with standing rotating fans.
The only major complaint I have about this fan is that if you set the fan on the floor, there is no way to angle the fan so the air is directed upward. This means that if you're sitting on a chair/sofa with the fan aimed toward you, the air will primarily be at your feet. The only way around this is to find a table or countertop to place the fan on, at which point it seems bulkier than it really is, plus it's taking up space where it shouldn't.
