Kingston to the Rescue

Okay so if you have read any of my reviews you know by now that I am in Yangchun, China. It isn't exactly the computer mecca of the world, but since I am in China I thought it wouldn't be that hard to find a "flash drive" since many are made here. I had no idea that the choices would be slim to none and the prices would be sky-high. I brought a little 1GB Ultra Flydrive with me and also a 1GB Sony Memory Stick. The Ultra I use to back up my journal that I am keeping and the Memory Stick I use to back up my digital photos. Well I had no idea how quick 1GB would go on the digital photos so I needed another Memory Stick or something similar and I wanted at least 4GB this time around.

Now my Canon A560 has a 2GB Sandisk and it works well so I went out to find either a Sony Memory Stick or Sandisk with 4GB. Let's just say that it wasn't easy. The best I could find was a Sony Memory Stick 2GB for around 435 RMB which is around $62 way more than I wanted to pay for less memory than I needed. The Sandisk prices were not much better and again I could not find more than 2GB of memory. That is until I stumbled upon a Kingston 4GB Data Traveler and the cost was 250 RMB or about $35. Now could I have bought it for less on-line, probably but the shipping to get it to me would have eaten up any savings at that point.

Now I am not the most computer smart gal but I like things that are simple and work. I put this puppy into my computer and it worked right off the bat and the two files I needed to transfer of photos took no time at all. Mind you they were 95, and 150MB which are not large files but still it took no time really. The Kingston is not built to take abuse as it isn't as sturdy as my Ultra but it does the job and I am not very hard on my "fly drives". I don't put them through the spin cycle and I don't drop them and step on them. I tend to treat them well so they hold up.

In short all I can say is Kingston came to my rescue with just what I needed at a price that was fair. Oh, and word to the wise if you are going to spend any time abroad, as I am finding out the hard way, take what you need in the way of computer back-up before you go, as prices abroad can be way out of line and choices are few.
