Author's Review
I work in an office that mainly uses computers. There are occasions where we are expected to type purchase orders. For nine years, I was able to get away with it, because I was never given a typewriter. Another secretary who had access to a typewriter would type all purchase orders until I received my very own. I was not happy.
I am so used to typing on a computer. Although there are many similarities, there are differences too. I am faster on the computer and know the ins and outs of it. I actually hate typing the old way. I thought I would never get used to it. Well, I quickly changed my tune, after weeks of typing on my IBM Wheelwriter 3000.
The Wheelwriter is a memory typewriter. It has an adjustable keyboard, where you can move it in an upright position or leave it flat on the desk. The carrier returns on its own. You can type in bold, set tabs easily, correct text, indent right or left, type envelopes, line space 1" 1.5" 2" or 3", change the language, or my favorite, spell check. The typewriter beeps after you type a word that it thinks you may have misspelled. It is equipped with a 50,000 word vocabulary. I have used all of the above features, but there is much more. If you have a power failure, the handy battery you place in the machine keeps your work handy. This typewriter has so much to offer in all of its 25 pounds.
For those of you who are interested, the features are as follows:
96 character keyboard, adjustable
50,000 word dictionary
Auto Correct
Automatic Carrier Return
Automatic Centering
Battery Backup
Bold Print
Column Layout
Connection Buffer - 4K
Decimal Tab
Draw
Express Cursor and Relocate Keys
Format Recall
Indent Right/Left
Justification and Right Flush
Line Find
Power Wise Energy Conservation System
Pre-defined Forms
Selectric Touch Keyboard
Subscript and Superscript
Variable Right Margin
Word Tab/Erase/Underscore
One reason I hate doing these reviews is what I just typed above. I copied that complete list from my book on this typewriter. I hope it is useful to some of you. All I can tell you is that this typewriter is a pleasure to use, and the directions are very easy to understand.
I still prefer my computer to the typewriter, but if you have to use a typewriter, the IBM Wheelwriter 3000 is the one for you.
