Product Review

Lexmark X6170C's would be great if they'd keep working!

by   kaneh ,   Nov 7, 2006

Pros:  Low price, useful, many features, flatbed, multi-feed, stand-alone fax, etc. Print speed & quality ok.

Cons:  Very irritating to me to spend many hours trying to keep one of them working.

The Bottom Line:  I recommend avoiding this unit. I wish I could recommend it, but I literally spent as much time trying to keep it printing as I did using it.

Overall Rating: 1/5 stars

Author's Review

I've had two of these in the last couple of years. The first one worked great for about a year, then the modem failed, shortly after the warranty expired. I still have it, it scans great, and prints well, except that I have frequent paper jams. I bought the second one because I figured the hardware malfunction was just a fluke, and I really liked the features of the product. After several months, I started having many paper jams. Not just jams, but knurling up of half printed papers, and the carriage would continue to pour more ink on the wadded up sheet. It was kind of funny, except when I really needed something important printed. I procrastinated calling tech support. Also, probably even earlier than the paper knurling problem, I began having a software problem. The printer often failed to communicate with the computer. Sometimes powering the printer off then on would fix the problem, sometimes a windows restart would fix it. Later, the problem seemed to get worse, and no amount of restarts would fix it, so I called Lexmark Tech Support. They quickly and patiently walked me through some troubleshooting procedures, and had me to change the print processor software to NT EMF 1.008. That seemed to fix the problem for about a week, then the same printer communication problem arose. I called tech support again, and they had me to stop the windows print spooler, then restart the print spooler. Sometimes this would fix the problem, and sometimes that had to be done in combination with restarting the printer a few times, and also restarting windows a few times with the printer on and the spooler off, then the printer off and the spooler on, and on and on. Eventually though, if I didn't run out of time before the end of the day, I could get a page or two to start printing, but by now the knurling problem had arrived and about 40% of the time after finally overcoming the communication problem, the paper would rip and crinkle up like a spitball. After some more procrastination on my part, I finally called tech support to see if my unit was still in warranty. I believe it probably was, since it had a 1 year warranty, and it was manufactured in September, '05, and I was calling in October, '06. It might not have been in warranty, but most likely it was. (In addition to possessing great procrastination skills, I am very good at losing receipts) Anyway, the tech support man couldn't find a record of my serial number, so as soon as I get the ink cartridges out to use in the one that still works a little, I'm going to literally go throw this one down a hill. But, this machine has such a low price and so many great features. I hope my two duds were just flukes and everyone else gets 6170's that don't tear up.
