Product Review

Mag Lite 3 D-cell

by   idsign ,   Mar 5, 2004

Pros:  Bright and hardy light for the money, upgradeable and dependable

Cons:  The reflector should be orange peeled or faceted to remove dark spots in beam.

The Bottom Line:  Highly recommended, best compromise of high output and weight the average joe can afford. Upgradeable for battery life or brightness.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I own several different Maglites; from the tiny AAA Solitaire, the AA Mini-Mag, a 2 C cell Maglite, and now the 3 D-cell model. Of all of the afformentioned lights the 3D model is the best suited for serious light throwing. I will be honest and say that I had consigned myself that I would have to buy a $50+ flashlight to get any real beam throwing power, not anymore. I have been impressed by the quality of the light output of this flashlite. It is in a different league than than their smaller lights.
The beam of this light can be focused from a small bright spotlight to a night filling flood. Adjustment of the beam is quick and easy thanks to the cam action twist of the head. The beam is infinitely adjustable between the spot and flood simply by turning the head to your desired spot size and and focus. The light that springs fourth from this flashlight is as white as an incandescent bulb in a flashlight under $50 can be. It has a slight yellow to it but with full batteries it's fairly unnoticable. As the batteries drain the light seems to take on a yellower hue.
The flashlight itself is very well constructed. The body of the light is high-strength aluminum alloy adonized for toughness and corrosion resistance inside and out. The hand grip portion of the head and body are machine knurrled for easier gripping and slip resistance. There are rubber o-ring seals to prevent water from penetrating the light and the three position switch has a rubber cap to protect it. This light is not a submersible by any means but should be able to handle a momentary dunk. There is a spare bulb in the tailcap which is handy because the downfall of any incandescent light is that they burn out bulbs if jarred or dropped hard. In addition replacement bulbs are available at most department and sporting goods stores.
Now for the fun stuff. I bought this light because it was on clearance. But I have also spent some free time researching flashlights and l.e.d. flashlights (which are the wave of the future for all portable light sources). There are several option available and more in development each passing day. The modular nature of this Maglite allows for the removal of the yellow battery hogging incandescent bulb and installation of a led module. The light from the new led modules is much, much whiter, and for the same amount of light will last much longer on the same batteries and will not burn out like a bulb. A couple of the manufacturers off the top of my head are: InReTech and EverLED.
