Product Review

Know What You're Buying!

by   rahrahmo ,   Sep 25, 2006

Pros:  Peppy, fun, smooth driving car

Cons:  Electrical Engine Harness Manufacturer Defects

The Bottom Line:  Know if the electrical engine harness was replaced - it's costly and repair records should show payment of more than $1,000 to get parts and labor!

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

I purchased my C-280 three years ago (2002)and got a good deal...thankfully it was a good deal...what I didn't know when I purchased the car was that all MB cars of that year had problems with their electrical engine harness - over time it decays, deteriorates and leads to numerous electrical problems that start small and grow as the wiring gets worse. To repair the problem through MB - minimum 2,000....the harness alone - as a part - is 1,200 and then you pay for the labor to pull the whole engine apart and replace it. Through an MB mechanic I lucked out and paid cost for the part and another $200 for labor - so $1,400 - money well spent to bring my baby back to life!

If I'd known about the problem I may not have bought the car...so if you're considering buying any MB from 1993-1996 make sure you get the records that the electrical wiring harness was REPLACED - otherwise you'll have to replace it at some point IF the car doesn't die because of the insideous electrical problems that will start to plague it.

Once replaced the car will perform as expected - peppy, quick and smooth with no problems! I love my car, but thought I'd warn any would-be buyers to watch out for dealers and/or individuals who are looking to dump their headache on you and don't tell you about the electrical harness problem!
