Author's Review
"I hope this small gift makes your career a little easier, and you can even use it on your pants ..."
This is what the gift tag said. This past Christmas, my husband tormented me by offering this hint on the tag of my gift and keeping it in plain view for two weeks prior to the big day. I wondered over and over ... what would help my career that I could use on my pants ... an iron? No, couldn't be. The box was too small. I never guessed.
On Christmas morning, I was surprised to open the gift and find a brand new Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical mouse. I had been eyeing them at our department store but wouldn't spend the $49.95 on myself. "Shake, shake - Rattle, rattle" is what my husband heard quite often with my old mouse, usually followed with some muttering he couldn't make out, so he decided it was time for a change.
I had promised myself not to go on the computer for the whole day of Christmas, but when the rest of the family jumped on the Playstation to try out their new toys, I couldn't resist trying out mine.
Installation was a snap. With the computer turned off, I only had to plug the mouse into the mouse port, turn the PC on and answer a few onscreen questions to configure it correctly. With that done, I was ready to surf with ease.
The IntelliMouse comes with the software for IntelliPoint 3.2 which is basically all the bells and whistles of mouse icons. I don't use this feature so much as I am happy with a plain 'ole arrow pointer, but this offers the options of some very cute pointers, including an actual mouse. This is also where you set the mouse to your comfort for right or left-handed, how fast you want the clicks to work, etc ...
One of the features this mouse has is side Back and Forward buttons. These are buttons that can be clicked with your thumb and pinky to go Back or Forward when surfing. The feature saves time from having to go all the way to the top of your browser to hit those buttons (you know, that's a long way!). I don't care for the Forward button simply because my pinky doesn't cooperate enough to take my brain-to-finger commands, but I love the Back button. You can, however, set these buttons to perform other duties, but I like them the way they are.
It also has my favorite of all times feature - the scroll wheel. This makes it soooo easy to move up and down each page no matter where you are. My old mouse had this so if this new one wouldn't have, I would have been lost. Every time I have had to use someone else's computer to help them out, if they don't have a scroll wheel, I find myself scrolling anyway - on nothing. So this makes me love this mouse even more.
Of course, the main point of this mouse is to eliminate the whole ball problem. My old mouse constantly had a problem with dust and gunk getting caught up under the ball. I was cleaning it, it seemed, more than I was using it. But this one, it is a gem! I have not had one problem. There is no more skipping and jamming like before. It glides with ease, never getting caught up on anything. I can use it with or without a mouse pad, and yes, I can even use it on my pants (leg) if I so choose. Because there are no open areas, I have no worries of the mouse getting clogged with dust.
Since receiving this mouse several months ago, I have been nothing but happy with it. It has already paid itself off by giving me frustration-free surfing. Though the price is a bit steeper than many other regular mouses (mice?), it is worth it to know that there isn't a ball to cause problems. I would recommend any avid surfer to check it out and see if it would help solve their surfing problems.
