Product Review

I love my Mio

by   jsak ,   Nov 30, 2007

Pros:  ease of use, maps are very accurate

Cons:  weak volume, sometimes sends you through neighborhoods for no reason.

The Bottom Line:  Buy it today, and then send it to me!

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

I have had my Mio for the better part of a year. The job I have requires me to make up to 45 different stops per day. So I actually USE this. I received this unit as a gift and was hesitant to use it at first. I was lost in a rural area and had it with me and decided to give it a try. It got me out without a problem and I have used it ever since. I never read the directions and so I would conclude that it is simple to use. I have heard complaints that this unit does not "say" the name of the street that you need to turn on. BIG DEAL the name of the street is on the screen. If you have never had a GPS that tells you the street, you will not miss it. I will admit that the sound volume is sub par. At maximum volume it becomes hard to hear the voice at top speed, rough terrain or when the radio volume is loud. After I had used the unit for a few months, I turned of the sound anyway. There are some maps that are not accurate, but in my line of work I have used every mapping software, the internet and road maps and none are ever 100% accurate. I have also heard of a problem with having to reboot the system. I use this sucker EVERY day ALL day and I can say that I have had to reboot about 10 times and it takes about 15 seconds, not a problem.

My only big complaint is that at times the unit will send me through a neighborhood to get to a highway when I am already on a highway that intersects said highway. It would be much easier to go north 2 miles and turn right than go through a neighborhood for 1.25 miles to get to the same place. It does not matter if I set it to Shortest, fastest,or economical. It will also send me through a gated community to get to a highway, this ticks me off sometimes.

This thing is great however, with route recalculations if you miss a turn or it tells you to turn where there is not a road you can always keep going and it will give you a new route in seconds.

I have used the unit for my job in several large cities, and in different states. I am sometimes amazed at the roads that are actually in the maps in remote rural areas. Many times I have looked at the screen and thought "there is no way that there is a road in 240 yards and sure enough there is the road! I am now unable to go anywhere without it. If I drive my wife's car I constantly look at the windshield in hopes that it will tell me where to go.

If this one ever dies I will get a new one.
