Author's Review

A movie like Mrs. Doubtfire comes once in a life time and it might represent the zenith of Robin Williams' acting career. Williams is brilliant in his portrayal of a parent being told that"this marriage does not work for me any more." By far and away, there is nothing about this movie that is lovable, notable and worthy of many watches for years to come. It is a good snapshot of life in America in the '90s with children having to choose and parents making choices and living with the result of those choices.
However, this movie takes you through the entire range of human emotion - from laughing your butt off to crying your heart out. I seldom see a movie more than once. I saw this one three times while it was in the theaters.
The children are so well casted - and Sally Field certainly contributed to the success of the film, as well. The youngest child really makes the movie as real as cinema gets.
The dynamics that occurs about splitting up parents and new mates for parents and all the madness those issues bring are well placed and good reflective images of what happens to all involved.
The manner in which the story ends - is heartening and perhaps some of the most honest movie making this country has seen, to date.
The only thing I might have changed about this movie is the casting of Pierce Brosnen. He seemed a bit more aloof for his part than what I might have chosen. But, even he cannot detract from this beautiful movie about real people trying to make the best of a not-so-good situation.
Everytime it comes on a cable channel and I happen to catch it, regardless of what I am doing, I have to sit and watch the rest of it. It can only brighten my day and give me hope in a less than perfect world.
