NEW YORKER IS STILL THE BEST

Date of Review:  Mar 27, 2001
The Bottom Line: A great magazine for keeping up with the arts and for the articles and cartoons. I wouldn't miss a week of it.
Review: I have been a New Yorker reader for 45 years and there were few changes in that time. Then Tina Brown came in and sparked it with flashy design and snappy content. She cut the length of the notorious maundering articles and tightened the editing. A...

Holidays Past - and FUTURE - Technology Issue - Also, a memorial to 9/11/01

Date of Review:  Dec 16, 2000
The Bottom Line: It is the best magazine.
Review: =============For the first issue after the disaster at the World Trade Center, dated September 24 - the Cover had to be special. It was. It was a plain solid black with the Magazine Title, date and price.============= I cannot think of a more apt...

Dull, More Dull, Dull as Hell

Date of Review:  May 25, 2000
Review: The cartoons are still good. But the rest of mag -- dull. When that woman -- forgot her name -- was editing, the mag was the best it's ever been. Lively, topical, and entertaining. Even had good pics. Then she left, and the mag plummeted. The issues...

Magazine Meanderings

Date of Review:  Sep 9, 2008
The Bottom Line:

I like it.

Review: Readers beware of subscribing to The New Yorker. This legendary anthology of New York culture contrived to provide readers with enormous amounts of information on, not only the city where most of our major magazines originated, but on nearly every...

The Big Apple

Date of Review:  Nov 21, 1999
Review: When the New Yorker was founded it was a new kind of magazine: intelligent, timely, and brimming with acerbic wit. The magazine became famous for inciteful articles, cutting edge fiction, and great cartoons. The New Yorker was THE magazine to...

Date of Review:  Jul 23, 2001
The Bottom Line: If you want to "look" important and trendy, buy it. If you are looking for intellectual depth, look elsewhere.
Review: I can vaguely recall reading the New Yorker fifteen years ago and being challenged by the level of the prose. I would be surprised if the average eighth grader would find the material challenging today. Tina Brown turned the New Yorker into "Cosmo"...

More than a coffee table mag.

Date of Review:  Aug 31, 2000
Review: When I was growing up the framed covers of The New Yorker that lined the walls of my father?s stairway always fascinated me. He, having grown up just outside of New York City, found The New Yorker to be his literary return to his home. Every week it...

The Apex of Interesting Reading

Date of Review:  Apr 7, 2000
Review: Maybe this will be easier if I list the reasons why I love this magazine:

1. It's weekly. How the editors build such a deeply considered, timely magazine each week I have no idea, but somehow they pull it off in high style. Time and again,...

A Classic Keeps Getting Better

Date of Review:  Oct 25, 1999
Review: The New Yorker isn't just any magazine - it is The Magazine. Despite the fact that it may or may not have only 800,000 paid subscriptions, or that it may or may not be losing a few hundred thousand dollars per year, this venerable book contains some...
