Very Small - Very Portable Web Browsing Device

by   playhooky ,   Apr 22, 2007

Pros:  Highly portable Internet browsing device

Cons:  Video limitations, no real keyboard makes long emails tedious

The Bottom Line:  Its a highly portable web browsing and email device. If this is what you need than the price is worth it.

Overall Rating: 4/5 stars

Author's Review

"Nokia's latest device, the N800 Internet Tablet, is unique, to say the least. It's not a smartphone, yet it can send and receive e-mail messages; it's not a phone, yet it can make phone calls; it's not a portable multimedia player; yet it can playback audio/video files; and it's not a notebook, yet it can browser the web. Are you confused yet? Alright, let's see if we can define the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet. The N800 does a lot of things, but it can't be placed in any one of the multitude of portable categories. Nope, it's in a category all by itself." - OS News

There is a niche market for people interested in very portable web browsing. Take me for instance. I basically run my entire online retail business via a web browser and email. I create the store, handle inventory, handle order processing, customer service and even marketing all online with basically two tools - a web browser and an email account.

My computer won't deal with the UPS man or take my boxes to the post office, but for day today business all I really need is access to a web browser. Another person might be into Ebay (buying or selling) or sports, or a news junkie or a MySpacer and similarly find themselves desiring access to the web.

The Nokia N800 product attempts to solve this need for web browsing via a very small, very cool looking device that you can put into a purse or pocket.

The N800 can do a lot of things but its main purpose is to access the web on a portable internet tablet. The Nokia Nseries N800 Internet Tablet provides connection to the Internet via Wi-Fi or compatible cellular phone (via Bluetooth). You can conduct video conferences on-the-go using internet calling and an integrated webcam which pops out of the side of the unit. Entertainment is available thanks to the integrated media player, high-quality stereo speakers, UPnP audio and expandable mass memory but don't try to play YouTube video because the unit will crash.

But this device does allow you to browse the web with a "standby" type device without having to pull out a bulky laptop and wait for it to boot up.

Where Is The Keyboard?

Potential buyers might be looking for a keyboard on this unit. Input is available via two ways - handwriting analysis (which can be tricky) or the on screen keyboard. You are not going to do any serious typing with this unit but you can send short notes and type in web addresses without going to nutty. Bluetooth accessory keyboards can also be used.

Expensive

The Nokia N800 costs just under $400 and you can get a full featured laptop for about $150 more that so what you are paying for is the extreme portability. If you live in an area with lots of free wireless Internet access and you can't live with email, weather and sports updates, Ebay bidding watches or Mapquest or maybe keeping an eye on our online business without booting up a laptop, this device might just be the solution to your technology problem.

But one thing I don't like about this device compared to a laptop is the lack of storage space. If you are traveling on a trip and are taking lots of photos with your digital camera its nice to have a laptop around to download your photos on to - this device does not have a lot of memory space to use for this purpose. It uses memory cards like the digital cameras.
