I Love This Camera!
Date of Review: Mar 14, 2007
The Bottom Line: Being a first time digital camera user, this camera was easy to learn and use. Lots of options and small enough for a evening purse or jean pocket.
I bought this camera a little over 6 months ago before I went on my honeymoon. I've never owned a digital camera before and was hesitant to buy one at first. My husband finally talked me into getting this camera because it has a 3x optical zoom, 6 megapixel, and has lithium ion battery that is rechargeable. Its so compact that I can carry it everywhere with me! I love that it fits into the little purse that I carry with me when I go out with friends (fits comfortably into my jean pockets too).
I love that there are so many features that it comes with. There are 10 special scene settings (sport, indoor, candle, self portrait, sunset, fireworks, behind glass, cuisine, documents, and auction) and a few of normal settings (night, portrait, and landscapes). I like that Olympus has included a built in guide that helps you take better pictures. On top of all that, there's also a movie mode! Now, I have a 512mb memory card and can take 12 minutes of video. While there is no lighting element for the video, I found that it does take very nice video in areas with little light.
I like the screen because it is big enough that I don't have to lean in too close to view the pictures that I have just taken. And when people lean in over my shoulder to view what I'm looking at, they can see it. It was nice and easy to learn how to upload pictures from the camera to my computer. I don't remember having to install any software to do so. I just plug in the cord from the camera to the USB port in the back of my computer, wait for the camera to prompt me about where I want the pictures to go to, and click the "ok" button. Then, a little screen pops up on my computer screen and my pictures appear.
The only thing that I'm not crazy about is the battery/memory card placement. While it makes sense to put them on the bottom of the camera, the battery area has a little tab that you have to pull down to make the battery pop out/in. I find this to be a little annoying at times as my fingers tend to get in the way while replacing the battery. While that may be a minor nuisance, it is my only complaint about the camera.
Overall, this camera was super easy for me, a first time digital camera user, to learn to use. If one is in the market for a new camera, and would like to try digital, I would highly recommend this camera.
