This game REALLY gives you a feel for what it must have been like to travel the Oregon Trail like our forefathers! WOW! I had never even thought about it before, except to watch shows like Little House on the Prairie. It must have been absolutely devastating!
This game takes you thru traveling from Missouri to Willaimete Valley in Oregon. You pack your family into a covered wagon, buy some goods from the local market, and off you go. You have to make decisions about when to rest, when to hunt, etc. You run into all kinds of obstacles along the way; snake bites, illnesses, sick oxen, no water, bad water, no grass, losing the trail, crossing rivers, thieves, bad weather, no luck hunting, broken wagon parts, fires, etc. It's an amazing experience. I've played many times and only rarely have I reached my destination with all the members of my party alive and healthy!!!!! Many times you start out and before you get half way there almost all the members in your family will die. That really makes you realize how hard it must have been, what risks they took to make a new life for their families!
I first discovered this game when I took my 4 year old son to the library to play their computer games. They had Oregon Trail as a history game, and Reader Rabbit as their language arts game. We loved both and went out and bought them. To be quite honest with you, I liked the original Oregon trail the best. Although the graphics and choices you can make in later editions get more advanced, this also makes the game even more time consuming. It takes a good two hours to play it, and more if you run into lots of complications.
