We love our Panasonic DMR-ES40V DVD Recorder: from a non-techie

Date of Review:  Jan 28, 2007
The Bottom Line: We've had our Panasonic DVD Recorder for almost a year and it has provided us with excellent service.
Review: We bought this unit because we needed a new DVD player. But the primary reason we wanted it was because I have lots of old VHS tapes of family members. Many of the VHS tapes are at least 15 years old and I'm sure they are not going to last much...

Panasonic DMR-ES40VS DVD Recorder / VCR Combo with FireWire (DV) Input

Date of Review:  Feb 23, 2006
The Bottom Line: The Panasonic DMR-ES40VS is an excellent DVD/VCR recorder. I like its high feature content, build quality, excellent performance, format...
Review: A new Panasonic DMR-ES40VS is a DVD-recorder and a VCR combo that sells for less than $300 and is an update to the Panasonic DMR-ES30VS. The device records to DVD-RAM discs, DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD+R (but not to DVD+RW) and has a FireWire (DV) input...

It's a mixed bag, but a pretty nice bag...

Date of Review:  Apr 3, 2006
The Bottom Line: DVD recording technology seems to be a little rough around the edges but the DMR-ES40V makes a strong showing at a great price. If only it would have held up.
Review: I've always liked dual decks, even before there were DVD/VCR combos. Years ago I thought the coolest thing would be one of those GoVideo dual deck VCRs... Boy was I wrong, what a colossal piece of crap. You can read about that experience Here.

The best rated DVD Recorder, only better!

Date of Review:  Dec 5, 2005
The Bottom Line: I highly recommend the 40V for VHS to DVD conversion. It's easy to use and produces great results.
Review: Okay, I purchased this yesterday. So my evaluation is only based on all the tests I've run with it in the last 24 hours.

Frankly, I'm very impressed with the unit. I really didn't think they'd come out with a DVD recorder that "any idiot"...

Model DMR ES40V

Date of Review:  Jul 31, 2006
The Bottom Line: Would recommend this unit, does what it says it will do.
Review: The very first VCR I purchased was a Panasonic. It was the first unit ever sold and was expensive. It did a great job .

This unit is also good. The manual shows how to get started step by step. However, once I turned on the TV, the unit...

Great hardware, but one AWFUL software flaw

Date of Review:  Nov 7, 2005
The Bottom Line: Avoid (at least if/until they upgrade the firmware) because the VCR is ill-suited for anything but playback until they fix the integration between VCR and DVD.
Review: Before I get to the good parts, the major flaw is this: I cannot figure a way transfer a home video to DVD without it butchering the contents by breaking up the footage into dozens of segments (titles) that overlap very poorly. I'd be happy with...

Garbage DVD recorder

Date of Review:  Mar 27, 2006
Review: I am so sorry I bought this horrible DVD recorder. I had trouble with timer recording it won't say OK in check. It's a tape eater. The picture quality is like looking at the picture underwater. How could you people who review this awful machine give...

Very good BUT

Review: So far so good with this ES40V, but I'm having the same issue everybody else is. I cannot make chapter thumbnails automatically.

I must have bought a lemon

Date of Review:  Feb 26, 2006
The Bottom Line: I might have bought a lemon but help from Panasonic absolutely hopeless. This model now discontinued and the ES45V is far far better but operating instructions still confusing
Review: Bought this for Christmas 2005 and it worked perfectly for a week or so. I was able to dub home movies to DVD. Could also dub to DVD copies of movies and sports on VHS which I taped from TV. Out of curiosity I also tried dubbing store-bought VHS...

OK DVD player, otherwise clunky

Date of Review:  Aug 31, 2006
The Bottom Line: Not recommended except for the most basic VHS and DVD playback
Review: Purchased this in January 2005 almost solely for the VHS to DVD dub feature. My VHS tapes had, since I got my first DVD player 5 years ago, been rotting in a steamer trunk that doubled as a TV stand. I knew I would get VHS quality when I dubbed the...
