Product Review

Pokemon... heh heh heh wow

by   mascot1063 ,   May 25, 2001

Pros:  251 pokemon!

Cons:  you can only get some their package (some can only be found in the originals)

The Bottom Line:  Even if you aren't a Pokemon fan, give this game a try. I'm not a Pokemon fan, but I love this game to death!

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Oh my goodness! A Pokemon game that is good? Well, yeah! Even for older gamers like myself! First of all let's get the worst over with. The music get irritating at times, but it'd not like your ears are gonna explode or anything. So don't worry about that.

Whew! Good thing I got that over with quickly! Now lets see why this game became such a gem! Well, one of the good qualities about this game is that it has 251 Pokemon! (Yes, a 251st is added, although people don't know that.) But you still gotta get some of the originals from the red and blue versions. But hey, it's only like nine that you can't get from it! And you also start differently from the originals. Instead of Bulbasaur, it's Chikarita! Squirtle is replaced with Totodile, and Charmander is replaced with Cyndiquil! You start off as the hero and you must go through the first town and to the hut deep in the forest to meet Professor Oak. But not without your Pokemon. Go to Professor Elm to choose your beginning Pokemon. Then you go to see Oak. After you meet with Oak, he gives you an egg to bring back to Elm. But when you get the egg, Elm calls you on your phone to tell you about the thief. You head back home to stop the thief until your stopped by a mysterious person (or the rival). Once you beat him in a Pokemon match, you meet Prof Elm to find out that the person you fought was the thief. Now this is the best part I think. Although people might think it is, the plot is not to catch them all. Your main objective in this game is to catch the thief... or at least make him understand his Pokemon or something. Now if you ask me, that's a big plus! Now unlike the item list from red and blue, you get the backpack. That allows you to store items, TMs, pokeballs, and key items all in separate packs, making things a lot easier! Most things are the same though, so it is easy to learn. Now two things I specifically liked about this game is how you find some Pokemon and the time factor.

Number 1: You can catch (or obtain) Pokemon by doing different things! Walk into the grass (which is the most common), breeding (a little bit of Pokemon looooove), knocking them out of trees (with the head butt attack), trading, or evolving. This I like because it gives you more options in what Pokemon you want and how you will catch this Pokemon.

Number 2: The time factor allows you to catch Pokemon on certain days (and I mean in real life days) and times of the day/days. For example, on Fridays, you can go into a hidden cave to find a Lapras (but only on Fridays). Or when you wake up early in the morning, you can go into the beginning forest to catch a Ladyba or wait till night to catch a Hoot Hoot!. On three certain days of the week, you can join a contest and win prizes by catching the best Bug Pokemon (Scyther recommended because he evolves into Scizor of which I think is the best Pokemon) and then keeping your catch.

Now I have never really been interested in Pokemon cartoons, comics or toys ... but this game seems to have captivated my very interest!
