Product Review

Stylish, but painful! Good for lighter babies

by   sb_sweetie ,   Apr 19, 2005

Pros:  Hip-looking! Pockets are great! It's adjustable for mom & dad.

Cons:  Becomes uncomfortable fast! Expensive!

The Bottom Line:  Though I loved the look & the pockets of the Premaxx, I think there are more comfortable slings out there. It's too expensive for how uncomfortable it becomes.

Overall Rating: 2/5 stars

Author's Review

I have used the Premaxx New Edition since the birth of my son. He is now 3 months and 15 pounds (he was 10 pounds at birth). I stopped using it a few weeks ago because it's just too painful.

I guess I have extensive sling/carrier experience because our family now owns FIVE (including the Premaxx). We have the New Native Carrier, Nojo Sling, Baby Bjorn, and a Moby Wrap in addition to the Premaxx. Some carriers are good for quick trips, others for carrying all day long. The Premaxx fits into the first category.

First, a description:
The Premaxx is a sling type carrier that goes over one shoulder. It's made of machine-washable (line-dry) cotton material. It is adjustable in the length via a buckle. There are two pockets that easily hold keys/cell phone/wallet. I don't really think the pockets are large enough for a diaper, but maybe if you fold it up the pocket would hold it. The sling cinches down on both sides with cords that run through a button-type closure. You can hold a baby in the cradle or hip position, but I only used it for the cradle position.

How I USED the Premaxx (note PAST tense):
The Premaxx was great when my baby was a few pounds lighter. For trips to the grocery store, it was perfect because I could fit my wallet and keys in the pocket and be hands-free. Adjusting the sides of the carrier to "cocoon" the baby was easy while wearing (adjusting the shoulder height is a bit more tricky while wearing). The Premaxx is stylish and I have received numerous compliments and inquiries about it. In fact, every time I wear it, people comment. I also used the Premaxx for a 2-hour plane-trip when my baby was 8 weeks old. Again, the Premaxx was great because I could put my boarding pass and ID in the pocket.

Why I STOPPED using the Premaxx:
The Premaxx becomes uncomfortable after about 30 minutes of wearing it. My baby is now 15 pounds and I just can't comfortably use the Premaxx because ALL of the weight rests on about 6 inches of fabric on your shoulder. It's just too tiring for me.

Although I loved the Premaxx at first, I didn't get that much use out of it (especially considering the price). I would recommend the New Native Carrier over the Premaxx in a heartbeat. The New Native Carrier distributes the weight across your entire shoulder and back and stays comfortable for much longer.
