Product Review

Training, Home Theatre, Compared to LP530

by   djsepinions ,   Oct 20, 2004

Pros:  Small, small, small. Decent output in portable. Works for movies and presentations.

Cons:  Accessories and cables are too big.

The Bottom Line:  Small enough to travel yet bright enough for large screen movies!

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

My Epinions Philosophy
When I make a purchase, epinions is one of my most valuable resources for non-biased experiences and information. When I come here to research a product I read all of the reviews and the product specifications and details on other sites as well. You will find that my reviews try to focus on my personal experiences and research discoveries that I think are not easy to discover through pre-purchase research. This means that my review will not spend a lot of time on basic specifications, procedures or stock commentary that you can read in other places.

Vendor Information
Detailed specifications for this projector can be found at http://www.infocus.com/products/productview.asp?site_lang=1&site_region=1&prod=lp70plus&c=1

Why I Replaced my LP530
I originally owned an LP530 that I was very happy with. I have a projector primarily for training and secondarily for home theatre - so I was looking for a blend of features. As I stared to travel more the LP530 was just taking up too much room in my bag.

Home Theatre
For home theatre I was surprised at how this projector competed with my previous Infocus LP530. I usually ran the 530 at 1600 lumens (low power) because it was quieter and cooler. I have a 150" screen. Although this projector is about 200 lumens less (1400) - it seems to put out just as visible of a picture. For instance, the acid test of black levels - the movie The Matrix looks just fine on this projector. I am thinking this is partially due to the higher contrast ratio. It does seem like there is a difference in crispness of the picture - but I can't decide if that is just in my head - I can't find a DLP chip size for the LP530 so I am unable to figure out if there is a physical chip difference between the two.

Projector Is Portable - Cables Remote Are Not
So the projector has awesome portability - why is everything else that comes with it huge! It has a remote that is much bigger than the one that came with the 530. It has a huge PC connection cable and a 9 foot power cord. To make things slightly worse, the power cable does not have the standard PC end on it, so you cannot easily substitute a cord for the excessively long one that comes with it. (Also the non-standard cord end means that when traveling internationally you can't just grab a cord from a local PC - you must have an adapter.) I understand the need for long cables in specific situations, but why not provide short cables with extensions? Surely this could be done at the price point of this projector. It seems like InFocus has one size of all their accessories - which does not serve their line of ultra-portable projectors very well.
