Season 4 of the hit HBO television Show: Sex and The City (Finally some risks!)

Date of Review: Dec 21, 2007

The Bottom Line:  The best of their first 4 seasons, this one took a lot of risks that paid off, and is recommended as one of the series better seasons.
With the fourth season of Sex and The City the writers and the cast were able to take many additional risks and come up with some very innovative storylines after the success of Season 3. Rather than create episodes that were geared towards either bringing in an audience or trying to increase the ratings, they let the characters each try to work towards something. Instead of just being another show that was neither topical nor had episodes that built on each other, Sex and the City put together a season full of surprises and risks that took the show to a bigger level for me. There are of course some carry-over storylines from the previous seasons, but at the heart of these episodes were some really interesting ideas and plotlines that just further expounded the success of the show.

For the unfamiliar with Sex and The City, it is of course the story of 4 women amidst the stressful dating scene within New York City. The primary star, and narrator to the show, is Sarah Jessica Parker in the role of Carrie Bradshaw. Carrie writes a sex column for a major New York newspaper, and through it tells the story of sex and dating within the city. Of course she draws from personal experience to find article topics, and through the article she also learns life lessons. Her three friends are played by Kim Cattrall as Samantha Jones, Kristin Davis as Charlotte York, and Cynthia Nixon as Miranda Hobbes. All four are quite intelligent women, who are strong in the professional world, but have had issues with finding the perfect guy along the way. It of course leads to a lot of dating and talk of sex between the friends, as they all head down different roads trying to find "Mr. Right."

One of the episodes, the third of the season, says it all for the characters of the show, with its title of Defining Moments. First and foremost, there are some definitive moments in Carrie's relationships, as the season opens with her frustrations over her break-up with Aiden (John Corbett) at the end of Season 3. As she turns 35, she starts to feel very lonely, and it only becomes worse when people don't show up for her birthday. She makes some important decisions during the season, but it starts to take a back-seat to surprises involving Miranda and a pregnancy, Samantha and her decision to find a serious relationship, and Charlotte looking to re-kindle her marriage and find the fun in life again. The question about whether Carrie and Aiden will get back together, and if Carrie has gotten over Big come up at some surprising times.

I think that Season 4 really threw off the shackles for the show, and let the girls really take some risks with their characters. In a season that some might claim left the roots of the show, I think it actually let the main character evolve much further than before. There were many new interesting sub-plots, and in the 17 episodes from the season, there is something new each time for fans of the show. The characters seemed stronger, more emotionally involved, and even more interesting to the viewer as they started to become more human. Though sex was still a big part of the show, and of course New York City served its role as a supporting character, the show improved overall and presents a great set on these DVDs. There are only basic bonus materials as per usual, but the set is well worth some of the great writing that promoted a lot of development in the show.
