At first glance one would think that it is just a teched out looking station wagon. But once you get behind the wheel you'll discover an amazing blend of car-like responsiveness and SUV ruggedness.Given one of the highest safety ratings for the year for having standard front/rear side airbags along with driver/passenger airbags. As well as having, in my opinion, the best all-wheel drive system on the market, the Outback also boasts an economical 2.5L 4cyl engine (a 6cyl is available) that, for me, averages around 30mpg.The interior is comfortable and roomy, with all of the consoles controls easily in view/reach of the driver. The back seat fits three people and also has buckles to accommodate all types of child carriers. There is plenty of room the back seat for a family of four to take off for the weekend and not have the back seat too cluttered. If your 5'10" or shorter you can even comfortably sleep in the car with the back seat folded down.Driving this car is fun. Let me reiterate "FUN!". It is peppy off the line, accelerates smoothly and stops on a dime. To truly get a feel for how truly awesome this car is to drive, test drive one in a snow storm. The all-wheel drive system combined with a set of good grand touring tires will get you anywhere you need to go, safely. Also, the car handles dirt and minor 4x4 trails with ease. It has plenty of clearance and with a fairly short wheel base it is highly maneuverable. The first year owning the car I put around 45,000 miles on it. About two weeks after I got it, I got stuck 12 miles from pavement on a dirt road with 2 1/2 feet of snow on it. Long story short the two truck driver AAA sent to rescue me, got stuck three times before he finally got to my car, and he had a full size tow truck with snow tires and chains. The Outback is the ultimate snow car.
