What can I say but WOW! After wrecking our 2002 Passat GL 2wd I thought we could find no better auto. I was wrong. The Subaru along with there Customer service has out-performed my expectations. We get 24 /- around town and 29-30 on the interstate in Central NY.
The car rides so well in the soft and hardpacked snow that you need to be carefull when get out of the car. You fall on the ice but the car drives like a summer day. When I moved here I wondered why so many folks drove Subarus in the area. I quickly learned when I bought one in Jan. 2006 from Joe Keating at Five Star Subaru in Oneonta, NY. They negotiated with the price, so I bought it. The service intervals could be alot more resonable in price. The 30K service had heafty price tag, so I did it myself at about $20.
The stock Yokahama Geolanders where good when new but wear too fast. At 1/4 thread left we needed to get new tires for the snow conditions and more important ice traction. It still handled well but was 75% the car it was with those tires. One tire wore prematurly due to an alignment problem and one call to Subaru CS and they sent me a check. Only one actual repair. The sunroof draintube came loose wetting the headliner and trunk area. Subaru quickly repaired it and offered to pay for items that got wet, but nothing was damaged.
The $600 extra for the X model with the Gargantuan sunroof is a great value. It gives you the premium 6CD sterio, 4 wheel disk brake, wiper & mirror heaters, power seats and more. Again, it is a VALUE! A 7/100,000 Bumper to Bumper warranty from Subaru was also a no brainer to buy @ around 13000 since things can go wrong.
I know we will be buying another. The question is will we just keep this one and buy a second one. American companies should take lessons from Subaru and other Japanese and German Automakers. Other than my 2005 Dodge Cummins I have had nothing but problems with "NEW" American cars for the past 10 years. I am talking a Chevy and a Ford. It is sad to say after going Japanese and German it is hard to go back. If Subaru made a full size truck I would buy one in a heartbeat.
