What a beautiful, horribly grotesque film. I so wish I would have seen this one at the theatre. For months my husband has been anticipating the arrival of Sweeney Todd and when we didn’t make it to see it on the big screen , he was counting down the days for it to come out on Blue Ray. When the first release on DVD did not happen on Blue Ray, I thought I was going to have to pick him up off of the ground. Thank goodness we found it has been released in that form oversees.
I just watched the film and I am so overwhelmed by the intensity of a dark movie with so much depth AND to top it off…it is a musical…all sang by the actors themselves…and they sounded wonderful! Actors that aren’t known for their acting, that is.
The Logistics
Johnny Depp. What else should be said to the ladies? He is a strange guy, who can definitely act better than many in my generation (I am younger than him!). As Benjamin Barker/Sweeney Todd (and as Johnny Depp) he is hot, but he is also a revenge seeking, dark-sided barber who sees his share of blood shed in his life.
I thought it would be so out of character to watch Depp sing in a musical that I wouldn’t be able to enjoy it. Man was I wrong. When Sweeney Todd sang, I listened. I hung onto every word. Sometimes in the film, more so than I have seen Depp was so into his character that you could tell the emotion from his singing and his acting. It is intense! That is the word for the movie.
The Plot
Originally Benjamin Barker and later Sweeney Todd, Depp is a regular barber in a perfect new family - himself, wife and baby girl. The judge of the town decides he wants the wife of Benjamin Barker so he imprisons Barker. Barker returns to the town years later as Sweeney Todd, at first hoping that no one would recognize him…Then Mrs. Lovett (Helen Bonham Carter) does right away. She also informs him of his daughter being awarded to the judge and his wife poisoning herself. And so the revenge begins.
The Set of the Movie…is beautifully dark and possessive. It matches the darkness of the main characters. The singing, plot, sets, the make-up and costumes were right on the money! All of the actors and their characters became one and did such a great job.
Warning…this movie ain’t for everyone! Sweeney Todd becomes down right ruthless as the movie progresses. As a matter of fact…the judge, Mrs. Lovett, the judge’s assistant, and the boy - Anthony Hope become more and more reckless as time goes on.
There is also so much blood and horrid scenes, that not just anyone can sit through it.
But…
To me, on the other hand, this film is pure genius by filmmaker Tim Burton! A musical horror film, with the great Johnny Depp on lead? How can you go wrong?! Burton and Depp get a standing ovation from me!
