Author's Review
I just bought my brand new 2003 Toyota Matrix XR (Black).
Well I just bought it last month, and it's not brand new, I actually got a deal on the last 03 model they had (it was the dealer model). The perks with that, is that it was already including all the extra's that are available, and are usually charged extra, but being that the dealer (Milo) was so nice, he gave me a deal. (a rare occasion with a car dealer!)
Now, before owning this car, I owned a 97 Geo Metro, sedan style. So, for me, this is a huge step up. The first thing I noticed, is that the car has a very low body. Well, actually when I looked at it from the underside, everything sits just as high as a normal car, but on the exterior, the car has this extra low grill that goes around the entire car, so you have to be careful when parking, because you can easily scratch it. Also, when it snows or rains, the bottom of the car is more easily damaged by snow or salt, unless you sit there and wash it off. So in a sense, the car can be somewhat high maintenace.
Ive noticed that the ride in this car is very smooth, and the braking is very responsive. It is a little slow to start accelerating, but once you get it going, you can go very fast! I've raced the car a couple times, and it handles very good at fast or slower speeds. You can take it on the highway and even if youre going 70 or 80 mph the car does not shake, and it doesnt feel like the wind is going to blow it out of control.(something i always had to deal with when driving the old metro)
It's roomy, I can put my niece in the back with her car seat and still have room for other people to sit. And if you need extra cargo space, the back seats fold down for more space. Even the passenger seat in the front folds down. The glove compartment is huge, and there are cupholders in the front.
One unique thing is that there is a plug in the front for a carphone, and one to plug in your regular appliance (laptop etc.)This is something I had never seen before in the car. The sound system my car came with is very good, am fm radio with a cd player, and the antenna, twists off so that you can take it off when taking it in the car wash.
On the inside, it looks like a futuristic dashboard, everything is lined in something that looks like chrome, and at night, the interior light of the dashboard is red, something else i'd never seen before.
Another thing i noticed, is how often I have to put gas in it. I don't know if its because when I owned the other car, gas was cheaper, or the smaller engine, or the fact that I didn't go to very many places in the car, but I find myself going to the gas station more often and paying more for a tank of gas. Being that this car is not a 6 cylynder car, it shouldn't eat up so much gas, but like I said, gas has gone up, and I'm probably traveling more.
Ive noticed that in the city where I live...my car is only one of 5 of it's kind. (as far as people owning one)
Only two other people own a Matrix (one has a red one, and another in midnight blue), and a couple of people have the Vibe (the cousin of the matrix, so to speak). Comments that ive heard are that I own a modernized station wagon, which, when you look at it, it does look like one. But it's my dream car and I love it.
I believe this car is probably targeted to the younger crowd. Someone with more than one child would probably not benefit from it, because of the fact that its not as big as, say an SUV or a minivan. But for someone like me, with no kids, save for a niece, it's perfect. My insurance wasn't too bad on it either. Because it is a 5 door, and it has so many safety features, I only have to pay a little more than 100 dollars a month for full coverage. But of course that would vary with where you live, and who does your insurance. Plus, Toyota is a brand that I trust, and those cars usually last well over 200K miles.
