Product Review

Ice Maker is a disaster

by   navyfrank ,   Nov 10, 2007

Pros:  Conceptually, it is a great device for a bar.

Cons:  Technician training and support by U-Line is horrible.

The Bottom Line:  It is the last U-Line product that I will purchase.

Overall Rating: 1/5 stars

The unit has been a problem since we installed it. We noticed shortly after installation two problems. One: we were getting a small amount of water leakage in the front of the unit. (It is installed in a bar). Two: The ice seemed to coagulate quickly-much faster than other ice makers so we had to empty the ice bucket often. we attributed the first problem to the temperature setting and so lowered the temp. That solved the leakage problem but as it turned out only because the leaking water simply froze on the bottom of the refrigerator. This also meant that any non-alcoholic in the refrigerator section also froze. The second problem we just lived with. When we finally reported our problems (now out of warranty) to the company that sold us the unit, they quickly identified a repair company selected by the U-line distributor. Then the real problems began. Their repairman assumed the problem to be water flow to the ice maker so adjusted that. Since then we have not been able to make ice. Repeated visits (at least 4 more) by this company (and over $200 in charges)failed to get the ice maker to work despite replacing parts and assuring us when they left that it was fixed. They were on the phone direct to U-Line.
The company that sold the unit to us was so incensed at this failure that they arranged to have a new unit delivered to us and installed. Wish it was a happier ending. The new unit wouldn't make ice! They called in the repair company (Tri-County in Northern New Jersey) again and they blessed the install and the unit made 6 small ice cubes before they left. Then no more ice but including a major leak that ruined several floor boards under the unit. Company sent a different repair company. he worked on the unit for an hour, consulted with U-line tech support, and determined that the motor in the ice maker that turns the assembly was defective and they would have to get a part. Part is now on order. He left, I pushed unit back under the bar and it started making ice cubes!
