Worth Renting

Date of Review: Aug 26, 2000

THQ's Wrestlemania 200 for the N64 console was one of, if not, the best wrestling game. But that was for N64. THQ has now made a wrestling game for Dreamcast. Most thought that THQ will blow us away again with another great wrestling game. Too bad they dissappointed us.

To start off, let's look at the other wrestling game for Dreamcast: WWF Attitude. One of the worst wrestling game I have ever played. I rather play Royal Rumble made for Genesis. Attitude sucks compared to WWF Royal Rumble on Dreamcast.

So Royal Rumble for the Dreamcast IS the best Wrestling game for Dreamcast right now, but it still sucks.

The game starts off great with highlights of wrestlers doing incredible moves. Then you get to the modes, which is arcade mode and vs mode. In Vs mode, you only get to pick a wrestler and a partner. If a second player joins in, then they cannot be on your team. It's mainly a one-on-one fight where you can bring in your partner for help at times. But this mode allows up to 4 players fight, every man for himself. So having human tag-team partners are not included in this game, which is very bad. One of the great things about wrestling games are that you and a friend can duke it out together against other teams, which makes the game fun. but in Royal Rumble, there is no such thing.

In arcade mode, you either get to do an exhibition or Royal Rumble. In exhibition, you go through a series of fights, and there mnore you win, the further you go on. In Royal rumble, up to 4 players can fight, and as the game goes on, more wrestlers come into the ring. You just have to know them out of the ring.

The game does not contain a "create a wrestler" mode. Many players like to customize their own wrestlers, including myself. It doesn't even have title belts, like the WWF Championship Belt or the Intercontinental belt, so the game doesn't even have a point.

The sound to this game is alright. The little things the wrestlers say in the beginning of the match adds a good affect, but their mouths are closed. I though for a machine like Dreamcast, they can change that. The music is alright, but nothing past the ordinary.

Even though I have bashed this game so far, it still has some good qualities. The Royal Rumbles you fight actually feel like Royal Rumbles. Other Wrestling Royal Rumbles limit the number of wrestlers in the ring. This one limits it too, but the limit is up to 8. So there is total chaos in the ring, just like a real Royal Rumble. Plus, it's fun, since you get to keep coming back as any wrestler you choose. So fight as Matt Hardy, Jeff Hardy, even X-Pac if you want. You get to keep on coming back, trying out different people.

The graphics are... ok. They aren't the best, better than attitude, but not as good as Wrestlemania 2000. Plus the wrestlers do not move like robots.

The amount of wrestlers you get to pick aren't as good as it should have been. Wrestlemania 2000 had so many wrestlers to pick from, and plus about 20 spaces for customized wrestlers. They even have Stone Cold in this game. he's a good wrestler, but I haven't seen him fight recently. And no, showing up at wrestlemania for a second does not count. They have Edge in this game, but no Christian. They have Rikishi, but no Too Cool. They don't even have Steve Blackmon.

The controls for this game is fairly simple to learn. it's not too hard to figure out how to do the special. This game, not like others, don't have a button to control who you are facing, so you can easily fight more than one person, a big improvment. But sometimes, it's hard to control your wrestler and you end up hitting nothing but air.

In this review, i have chose to compare this THQ game with another game made by THQ, Wrestlemania 2000. It was to show how they could have made a great wrestling game for Dreamcast. Royal Rumble is ok for renting. Many wrestling fans might be wondering how the game is, even though many have givin this game a bad review. So before you buy it, rent it. It's not worth spending $40-50 buck on. But hey.. that's just my opinion.
